CBD Effects On The Heart

Similar to arthritis, heart disease is an umbrella term that can describe a wide variety of conditions. CBD may be able to serve as a preventative medicine to curb the onset of cardiovascular disease and improve overall heart health. In this article, we discuss the relationship between cannabidiol and heart disease, scientific support for the impact CBD has on cardiovascular health, and other cardiovascular conditions supported by CBD.

CBD, a compound found in the hemp plant, has been shown to mitigate cardiac dysfunction, increase blood flow, reduce scar tissue, reduce inflammation and it balances the death of cells that signal pathways in sugar-related diseases that affect the function of the heart.

What Is Heart Disease?

Similar to arthritis, heart disease is an umbrella term that can describe a wide variety of conditions.

Heart disease describes a range of conditions that affect your heart. Diseases under the heart disease umbrella include blood vessel diseases, such as coronary artery disease; heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias); and heart defects you’re born with (congenital heart defects), among others.

The term “heart disease” is often used interchangeably with the term “cardiovascular disease.” Cardiovascular disease generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina) or stroke. Other heart conditions, such as those that affect your heart’s muscle, valves or rhythm, also are considered forms of heart disease.

Many forms of heart disease can be prevented or treated with healthy lifestyle choices.

Are You At Risk For Heart Disease?

The dangers of heart disease are real, but you can evaluate your risk.

There are risk factors that increase the potential to develop plaque within coronary arteries and cause them to narrow. Atherosclerosis (athero=fatty plaque + sclerosis=hardening) is the term that describes this condition. Factors that put people at increased risk for heart disease are:

  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Family history of heart problems, especially heart attacks and strokes
  • Obesity

Since cardiovascular disease, peripheral artery disease, and stroke share the same risk factors, a patient who is diagnosed with one of the three has increased risk of having or developing the others.

Preventing Heart Disease

Healthy lifestyle choices can be key in preventing heart disease. Here are six steps you can take to reduce your chances of having heart disease.

  1. Avoiding excessive intake of alcohol
  2. Eating a diet that is low in salt, refined sugars, total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol and high in fresh fruits and vegetables
  3. Exercising regularly (at least 150 minutes a week)
  4. Following instructions to ensure the safe use of medications and any OTC drugs
  5. Taking steps to reduce stress levels, or get help with stress management
  6. Quit smoking

CBD And Heart Disease

What is the relationship between CBD and heart disease?

Heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the US, causing approximately one-quarter of all deaths every year. CBD may be able to serve as a preventative medicine to curb the onset of cardiovascular disease and improve overall heart health.

For starters, CBD may help to the relax the arterial walls of the heart, which reduces tension in the blood vessels and can help reduce the work that the heart must do to pump blood. The cannabinoids also protect the heart against cardiomyopathy, which causes hardening and thickening of the arterial walls and limits blood flow.

CBD has also been shown to reduce plaque in the arterial walls, which makes it more difficult for the heart to pump blood properly. Studies have also shown that CBD is an effective agent against inflammation, which is linked to heart disease. CBD can stop the production of endotoxins, which are pro-inflammatory cytokines that can cause heart conditions to worsen.

The anti-inflammatory effects of CBD and its antioxidant effects can protect the heart against tissue damage.

Scientific Support For CBD And Heart Disease

CBD has been shown to impact three primary aspects of cardiovascular health. These include:

  • Reduction of arrhythmia
  • Reduction of heart inflammation
  • Lowering of blood pressure

Evidence is growing for all of these claims, as research has begun expanding concerning this important topic. One study in particular seems especially promising:

A study published in 2010 in the British Journal of Pharmacology, shows numerous promising results for those who desire a better understanding of the correlation and connection between CBD (cannabidiol) and overall cardiovascular health. Conducted upon groups of male Sprague-Dawley lab rats that were each administered two different doses of CBD, the animals were then observed and the results were carefully noted and analyzed.

Ultimately, the conclusion that the researchers on this project discovered, was that the application of CBD actually lowered the number of induced heart arrhythmias and infarct size, which is a scale used to determine heart failure and its correlation to death. In the end, these scientists were able to conclude that at least in this study, CBD was in fact cardioprotective, meaning that it was able to assist with the maintenance of cardiovascular health.

Other Cardiovascular Conditions Supported By CBD

Can CBD be used to treat other cardiovascular-related conditions?

Evidence suggests CBD may help in treating several other cardiovascular-related conditions, including:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Stroke
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Cardiovascular disease
